Why Zero Waste?
In our current food system here in Canada up to 58% of all food is wasted! That’s 4.82 million tonnes of food, or nearly 21 billion dollars worth lost during processing and manufacturing each year. Of that amount 2.38 million tonnes is lost at the consumer level.
This food waste creates some 56.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions. Food in landfills also creates methane gas, which is 25 times more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide.
Then there is the issue with plastic waste from disposable cutlery, plates and packaging that is choking our ecosystem, leaching into our waterways and back into our bodies.
Why Plant Based?
A plant based diet is defined as consisting mostly of foods derived from vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, seeds and legumes with few or no animal products.
Meat agriculture is resource intensive. Did you know that it takes about 15 000 litres of water to produce just 1kg of beef?! In contrast it takes about 300 litres for 1 kg of vegetables. It also contributes to global warming in a couple of other ways:
1) through deforestation for pasture land and to grow feed crops
2) through methane and nitrous oxide emissions
The majority of meat produced is raised in less than humane conditions that require heavy applications of antibiotics which creates ever more resistant bacterial strains. These medications eventually flow back into our food and water systems.
Even going plant based 1 day a week can really help alleviate some of this environmental stress! Other benefits of a plant based meal include:
